Chapter Twenty-One

A couple days later, after Brae had tucked Ash in her crib and turned on the monitor, he headed to the den on the other side of the house. He was obviously doing something wrong and he wasn’t going to just let it be and hope for the best. He might’ve in the past but in the past he hadn’t been all that invested in whether his partners stuck around.

Ash? She belonged to him and he needed to prove it, so he called one of the smartest people he knew: Eric Southerland.

“How’re things out there?”

“That’s actually why I was calling. I…I need your help.”

He could picture Eric sitting up straighter, brows gathering in concern.

“Yeah? What’s up?”

“I don’t know, exactly. The flight out was fine although we got a little mobbed at the airport. Ash seemed pretty damn excited about the nursery, looked like a kid in a candy shop. It’s not like I’m some oblivious tool either, I asked her what’s wrong. She says everything is fine but everything is not fine.”

Everything was definitely not fine. Ash seemed happy enough in the nursery with her books and Ellaroo, but anytime they had to leave the property or he was heading out soon she seemed even more anxious than usual. She picked at her food, seemed distracted and listless, and smaller but not in the fun little girl way he loved.

“It’s a big change for her, you can’t expect her to adjust overnight. It’s not like Ashby’s a real thrill seeker, you know? Adventure sounds fun to you but it’s probably really fucking scary for her. And getting mobbed at the airport? Might happen every few weeks to you but she’d lived in the stacks of a quiet library up until like a month ago.”

“So what, I just have to give this time? I hate time. Time sucks,” he muttered.

“I mean yeah, you goddamn well better be patient because you acting all huffy and inconvenienced sure isn’t going to make that poor girl feel any better.”

“I haven’t. I have, 100 percent, kept this to myself. She worries about everything, I didn’t want her worrying I was unhappy with her. I’m not. I’m unhappy with myself for not being able to make her happy.”

He could practically see Eric’s brows crawling up his forehead. “Oh yeah? Well that’s a change. I think you really like her.”

If you only knew, Brae thought, but he wasn’t going to admit how hard he’d fallen for Ash, not even to his old friend. Not that he wouldn’t deserve the mockery Eric would heap on him—he totally would after he’d mercilessly needled Eric when he’d met Devaney.

“I don’t like failing and I don’t like sad people. Plus, I promised she’d have a good time and I keep my promises.”

“Alright, alright. Well it’s only been a couple days. Have you given her an enema yet?”

“What? Why would I do that?”

Eric tsked. “You’re a good top, Brae, and a good daddy for a scene or two but you’ve got a lot to learn about littles.
